How Were the Hackers Allowed to Enter?

The security compromise happened when a Linus Media Group (LMG) employee opened a PDF that seemed to be an official sponsorship offer. Owner of Linus Tech Tips, Linus Sebastian, explained in a video how this seemingly innocuous move resulted in a serious security breach:

  1. Phishing Attempt: The worker was sent an email purporting to be a sponsorship proposal from a possible partner, along with a PDF attachment.

  2. Malware Execution: When the employee opened the PDF, malicious software was launched, accessing all of their user data from installed web browsers.

  3. Session Hijacking: The virus took control of digital tokens known as session tokens, which enable users to remain logged into websites. Without entering passwords or two-factor authentication codes, the attackers could duplicate the browser sessions and have complete access to the YouTube accounts using these tokens.

Once in charge, the hackers engaged in a number of disruptive behaviours, including:

    • Channel Rebranding: Techquickie was rebranded as “Tesla” and started broadcasting a cryptocurrency hoax with deepfake figures like Jack Dorsey and Elon Musk.

    • Uploading and Removing Videos: A number of older videos, some of which had been designated as “do not publish,” have been re-uploaded to the Linus Tech Tips channel. Furthermore, there have been cases of movies being deleted in bulk.

    • Community norms Violated: As a result of the fraudulent activity, YouTube automatically terminated the channels for breaking community norms.
